How do I choose my first guitar?

Wonderful that you've decided to start. And the best news is that there is no single right answer — there are a few small questions that narrow it down very fast.

Classical, acoustic or electric? A classical comes with soft nylon strings and a wide neck: the kindest to your fingers, the most forgiving at the beginning, and an excellent call if your fingertips are sensitive. An acoustic gives you the sound most people picture when they say "guitar", but its strings fight back harder. An electric is actually the easiest of the three physically — thin strings and a short reach to the neck — but it needs an amp and a cable.

The simple rule: choose for the music you want to play, not for whatever gets labeled a "beginner instrument". People who buy an instrument that doesn't match what they love stop playing after two months.

How much money? The gap between a very cheap guitar and a mid-range one is enormous. The gap between mid-range and expensive is barely noticeable in your first year. Don't break a savings plan over this.

Left-handed? Real left-handed guitars exist, and they're the right choice if that's what feels natural to you. But it isn't compulsory — plenty of left-handed players use an ordinary right-handed instrument, because both hands work hard on a guitar and there is no "easy" hand. Try both in the shop and leave with whichever feels less strange. One thing though: this is not a decision you want to reverse a year from now.

Size. If you're small, or buying for a child, three-quarter and half sizes exist. A guitar that's too big for the body is a very common reason people give up, and it disguises itself as "I have no talent".

And what matters more than the model: that the instrument is in tune and properly set up. A guitar whose strings sit too high off the neck will convince you that you have no fingers, when what you really have is a guitar that needs a setup. A good shop will do it cheaply, sometimes for free.

How do you tune a guitar?

Between us, an out-of-tune guitar sounds like a cat with a stomach ache — and worse than that, it teaches your ear the wrong things. Which is why it's the first thing you do, every single time.

The six strings, thickest to thinnest, are tuned to E, A, D, G, B, E. The thickest one is the string closest to the ceiling when the guitar is in your hands.

How it works in practice: the simplest route is a tuner. We have one right here on the site that runs straight off your computer's or your phone's microphone — you pluck a string, it tells you whether you're too high or too low, and you turn until it goes green.

And if it all still sounds harsh after tuning — check that you're tuning the string you think you're tuning. It's the most common mistake there is, and everybody has made it.

What's the difference between alternate guitar tunings, like open tuning versus drop?

That's a question from the top of the class. Standard tuning is the default and you can play absolutely anything in it — but sometimes you change it on purpose, and doing so buys you two completely different things.

Drop tuning lowers only the thickest string, usually by a whole tone — from E down to D. What that gives you: the bass becomes deeper and heavier, and a full power chord can be played with one finger lying flat across three strings. That's why heavy rock and grunge love it: it leaves the rest of the neck untouched, so nearly everything you already know keeps working.

Open tuning is a different animal entirely. There you retune all six strings so that strumming across them without fretting anything gives you a complete, ringing chord. In open D, for instance, you strum the strings open and out comes D major. The huge advantage: a single finger laid across the whole neck gives you a full chord anywhere — which is why it's the tuning of slide playing and of a great deal of blues and country.

The price, and the reason nobody starts here: in an open tuning every chord you know stops working. The shapes change completely, and the neck temporarily becomes a new instrument.

A practical suggestion: start with drop D. It's cheap to come back from, it moves exactly one string, and you'll hear the difference in a second.

Why do my fingers hurt, and when will it stop?

Welcome to the club — every guitarist in history has been through this, no exceptions.

What's happening down there: the skin on your fingertips is still soft, and it's being squeezed between a thin stretched piece of metal and your own bone. Within two to four weeks of steady practice a hard layer of skin forms, and the whole thing simply stops being a subject.

What actually speeds it up, which is not what people assume:

And when to stop: pain at the fingertip is normal. Pain in a joint, in your wrist or in your forearm is not. That's a sign of technique drawing force from the wrong place, and it doesn't toughen up over time — it only gets worse. Stop, and check your thumb position and the angle of your wrist.

Also: if the skin tears, take a day or two off. It comes back stronger.

Do I have to learn to read music, or are tabs enough?

Short answer: no, you don't have to. Most of the good guitarists you can name don't read music, and it never cost them a thing.

What a tab is. Six lines standing for the six strings, and numbers telling you which fret to press. It is completely concrete — you see exactly where to put your finger, with nothing to translate. That's why you can learn a song from one in ten minutes.

What's missing from it. A tab tells you what to play and not when. It doesn't show rhythm, note lengths or silences — so you can't genuinely play a song from it that you've never heard. It's also why the same tab can come out of two people's hands sounding like two different songs.

What notation gives you. Exact rhythm, and a shared language with everyone who plays a different instrument. If you ever want to play with a pianist, in a band or in an orchestra, that's what they speak there.

And the thing that's worth more than either of them: understanding what's going on in the music — why these chords and not others, how they're related to each other, and what's coming next. You get that from basic theory, not from reading notation, and you can start on it in your very first week.

Our recommendation: begin with tabs so you're playing music you love from day one — that's what will keep you playing. Add basic theory alongside it. And notation? When you need it, you'll know.

How long should I practice each day, and how long until I can play a song?

Two questions, and one answer ties them together: consistency beats quantity, by an enormous margin.

How long a day: fifteen to twenty minutes, every day, is clearly better than two hours once a week. The reason isn't work ethic, it's physiology — your hand learns movements during the sleep between sessions, not inside the session itself. Seven short sessions give you seven chances at that; one long session gives you one.

And if you've only got five minutes? Do the five. Really. A day you skipped costs more than a short day earns.

And when do you play a song: if you mean a whole song with three or four open chords and a simple strum — somewhere between two weeks and two months for most people. It won't sound like the recording, and that is completely fine. It will be recognizable, and it will be yours.

What decides this more than anything else is the change between chords, not the chords themselves. Most people can hold two chords after two days, and it takes them two weeks to move between them without stopping. So practice the change, not the grip.

And one tip worth all the rest put together: pick one song you love and practice toward it. Drills with no music in them walk out on people after two weeks.

Why do my chords buzz instead of ringing clean?

This is probably the most common question of the first few weeks, and here's the good news: it's almost always one of four things, and all four are fixable in minutes.

1. The finger isn't close enough to the fret. The nearer your finger sits to the fret wire in front of it, the less force is needed and the cleaner the note. Halfway between two frets you'll need double the force and you'll get a buzz anyway.

2. A finger lying flat and touching its neighbor. Fingers have to come down on their tips, almost vertical. If they lie flat, their side mutes the next string along — and that's usually precisely the string that was supposed to ring.

3. Fingernails. If the nail meets the neck before the skin does, there's no way to stand the finger up properly. Cut them.

4. The thumb. It belongs behind the neck, roughly opposite your middle finger, not hooked over the top. A thumb wrapped around the neck drags the whole hand into an angle that keeps the fingers from standing up.

How to diagnose it in twenty seconds: hold the chord, then pick one string at a time from top to bottom. You'll hear exactly which string buzzes, and then look at the finger sitting on it or beside it. It's nearly always the neighbor.

And if everything is right and it still buzzes — press a little harder, but only on the string that's misbehaving. Not on all of them.

What is a barre chord, and why is it so hard?

A barre chord is a chord where your index finger lies across several strings at once and does exactly what the nut — that white strip at the end of the neck — does in open chords.

And that's the beautiful idea behind it: the moment your index finger replaces the nut, you can take any open chord shape and move it anywhere on the neck. F major is nothing more than E major shifted up one fret. One shape gives you twelve chords.

Why it's hard: not for lack of strength. Your muscles are perfectly fine. The problem is that an index finger isn't straight — it has joints and natural dips, and a string that lands right in a dip never gets pressed.

And how long it takes: somewhere between two weeks and two months, for everyone. You're not the exception. In the meantime, a power chord in the same spot is a completely legitimate substitute, and you can play entire songs with it.

Why does everyone tell me to practice with a metronome? It sounds awful

Yes, it sounds awful. And yes, it works — but not for the reason most people think.

A metronome isn't there to "make you fast". It's there to show you the places where you aren't steady, and that's an exposure you cannot get without one: an ear listening to itself play speeds up and slows down without noticing, and above all it slows down at exactly the difficult changes and races through the easy ones.

That's the only thing that gives it away, and it's also what turns a player who plays alone into a player other people can play with.

How do I start improvising a solo? It sounds like a talent I don't have

It isn't a talent. It's a skill with a very clearly defined starting point, and you can reach a first solo that sounds like music within a week.

Step one: the minor pentatonic scale. Five notes, that's the whole thing. It's called that because the two notes it's easiest to clash with have been left out — which means almost any note in it will sound reasonable over the chords. That isn't cheating; it's what most of the solos you know are built out of.

Step two: one box. The first pentatonic shape sits inside two adjacent frets across all six strings. One pattern, and when you slide it along the neck it works in every key.

Step three, and this is the one that truly makes the difference: play less.

Every beginner's mistake is to run the scale up and down as fast as possible. That sounds like an exercise, because it is one. A solo sounds like music when it's built from short phrases with silences between them — four or five notes, then two seconds of nothing, then something similar with one small change.

Think of it as a conversation, not a sprint.

And where to practice it: over a slow backing track, or over a twelve-bar blues — it repeats itself, so it's forgiving, and you always know where you are.

And what turns those notes into singing is just two techniques: string bending and vibrato. Both are waiting for you in the soloing course.

I want to play rock — do I need an electric guitar and an amp?

For it to sound like the record — yes, eventually. To learn to play rock — absolutely not.

What actually makes rock isn't the gear, it's two things: power chords and tight rhythm. Both work beautifully on an acoustic guitar, and you can learn them completely without an amp.

A power chord is only two notes — a root and a fifth — in a two-finger shape that moves anywhere on the neck. It exists precisely because full chords turn to mud through distortion, so the middle note was cut out of them. On an acoustic it sounds open and empty instead of heavy, but the movement is exactly the same — and the movement is what you're building.

And if you do buy: a cheap electric with a small amp is an excellent starting point, and sometimes cheaper than a decent acoustic. Two notes on that:

In the meantime? Start with what you have. The riff has no idea what it's being played on.

What's the difference between a major and a minor chord, and how do I remember which is which?

The usual explanation is "major is happy, minor is sad", which is roughly true and also not much help. Here's what's really going on.

A chord is three notes — a root, a middle note, and a fifth. The root gives it its name, the fifth gives it stability, and the middle note is the only one that decides whether it's major or minor.

And the difference between them is one semitone. One fret on a guitar. That's all. The exact same chord, one note moved down one fret, and the entire character changes.

That's why on the guitar the difference between A major and A minor is a single finger moving. Try it right now if there's a guitar within reach — hold A major, drop your middle finger one fret, and hear it happen.

And why this is useful: the moment you know the difference is one note, you stop memorizing chords by heart and start seeing how they're built. And from there it's also obvious why a power chord — which has no middle note at all — is neither major nor minor.

Do I need an acoustic piano, or is a keyboard enough?

A keyboard is entirely enough, and every lesson in this course fits comfortably onto an electric instrument. But two things about the instrument really do matter, and neither of them is the number of keys.

Weighted action. On an acoustic piano the key drives a hammer, so it pushes back against your finger. A keyboard with springy keys is a different instrument altogether: someone who learns on one for a year sits down at a real piano and discovers they have no finger strength. Look for the words "weighted" or "hammer action" before you look at any other spec.

Touch sensitivity. The instrument has to sound loud when you press hard and soft when you press softly. Without that, the entire subject of dynamics simply doesn't exist for you.

And the number of keys? Sixty-one is easily enough for a first year, seventy-six covers almost any pop and rock repertoire, and eighty-eight is a full piano. It's the least urgent of the three by a distance.

What doesn't matter at this stage, and yet takes up half the spec sheet in the shop: the number of built-in sounds, speakers, screens and auto-drums. Not one of them will teach you to play, and an instrument with a hundred sounds and a springy action is a bad deal next to one with a single sound and a weighted one.

One last thing worth knowing: an acoustic piano drifts out of tune over time, and tuning it is a job for a technician with specialized tools — not something you do yourself. An electric instrument never goes out of tune at all, so for anyone starting on one the subject simply never comes up.

How do I find middle C without stickers on the keys?

By the black keys — and it takes three seconds once you've seen it done once.

The black keys are laid out in alternating groups of two and three, all the way along the instrument. That's your map. The white key sitting to the left of a group of two is always C — on every piano in the world, at every size.

To find the middle one of them, look for the group of two nearest the center of the instrument: roughly opposite the maker's logo, and on an electric instrument roughly opposite the screen.

And why not a sticker? Because it postpones the learning instead of accelerating it. After three days of hunting by the group of two you'll find C faster than you could have found a sticker, and that skill stays with you at every instrument you ever sit down at. With a sticker you're tied to one specific keyboard.

The real gain here is that you learn to scan the instrument rather than count it, and that's exactly the ability that will later let you find any other note without lifting your eyes off the page.

And if the first few days really are hard, there's a better compromise than a sticker: put a small note behind the keys, beside the central group of two, somewhere that doesn't touch the key itself. It steers you to the right area, and your eye still has to find the key on its own. After three or four days you'll forget it's there.

And worth knowing: the same method works in the other direction too. The white key to the left of a group of three black keys is always F. Those two anchor points together are enough to find any other note on the instrument without ever counting from the end.

What is a chord inversion, and why does it matter more on piano than on guitar?

An inversion is the very same chord, with the very same three notes, arranged in a different order. You take the bottom note and move it up an octave — and that's it.

C major has three arrangements: C-E-G is root position, E-G-C is the first inversion, and G-C-E is the second. Written down that looks like C, then C/E, then C/G — and the slash says one thing and one thing only: which note is at the bottom.

And why does it matter so much on piano? Because an inversion saves travel. Going from C to F in root position, your hand leaps five keys; play that F as a second inversion and barely a finger moves. A hand that moves less makes fewer mistakes and gets there in time, and that's the difference between playing that sounds clumsy and playing that sounds like music.

And on guitar? There an inversion usually demands an entirely new hand shape, which is why guitarists simply skip the part after the slash and play the ordinary chord. On piano it's almost free, which is exactly why it's worth the investment for you.

There's a side to this you hear, not only a side that's convenient. The ear listens to the bottom note first and stacks everything else on top of it: root position sounds settled, like the end of a sentence; the first inversion sounds light and hovering; and the second sounds as though it wants to go somewhere else. So inversions aren't only a shortcut for the hand — they're also the simplest tool you have for changing how a chord progression feels without swapping out even one chord.

And when you meet a slash on the chord sheet of a real song, you now know exactly what to do with it: what's before the slash is the chord, and what's after it goes to the bottom.

I already play guitar — how much of it carries over to piano?

Far more than it seems, and exactly two things don't.

What carries over in full: all of the theory. Major and minor, root and fifth, chord progressions, scales, families of chords — all of it identical. You also already know how to listen, how to count time and how to read a chord sheet, and that saves you months.

What carries over with surprising ease: building chords. On guitar every chord is a shape of its own that has to be memorized; on piano they're all the same pattern — finger, skip, finger, skip, finger — and the only thing that changes is where you start from. Most guitarists are playing six chords on a piano within the hour.

What doesn't carry over, number one: the numbering. On guitar the thumb gets no number at all and counting begins at the index finger; on piano the thumb is one, in both hands. Finger two on a guitar is the middle finger; on piano it's the index. That produces a week of wrong fingerings in people who already know how to play, and two minutes of attention saves that week.

What doesn't carry over, number two: hand independence. On guitar one hand frets and the other strums — they do different things, but in perfect sync. On piano both hands play notes, sometimes in different rhythms, and that's a genuinely new skill. That's the real wall, and everything else is relatively easy.

Why is it so hard to play with both hands at the same time?

Because on piano both hands are doing the same kind of thing at different moments, and that's unlike any other instrument.

On a guitar, one hand presses strings and the other strums. They're doing completely different things, but they are perfectly synchronized — the strum happens exactly when the chord is ready. That's one task divided into two roles.

On a piano both hands play notes, sometimes in different rhythms, sometimes one legato while the other is staccato. Your brain tries to run two rhythms in parallel, and at the beginning it simply copies one onto the other.

And the solution is counter-intuitive: the goal isn't to run two things in parallel, it's to turn them into one thing. You're not managing two streams — you're managing a list of meeting points where both hands press together, and between those moments each hand carries on by itself. Once you know where they are, the passage becomes several times smaller.

What works in practice: one hand alone until it's boring, then the other, then both at half the tempo — not at eighty percent — and on a single bar in a loop.

And the thing most worth knowing: this is not talent. Everyone who plays the piano today had exactly this week.

When do I press the pedal, and why does my playing sound smeared?

Almost always for the same single reason: you press at the start and release at the end. The result is a heap of every note played in the last minute, all sounding together.

The right-hand pedal lifts every damper in the instrument, so any string that's been struck goes on ringing after the finger has left. It doesn't clear what came before — it only stops stopping it.

The rule, and it runs against instinct: you lift the pedal at the exact moment the new chord sounds, and press it again immediately afterward. Not before, not together. After.

The order is three steps inside a quarter of a second: the fingers play the new chord; the foot lifts, and all the old notes are cut off; the foot presses again, and the new ones are caught. The result is completely seamless, because in the split second the pedal is up your fingers are still holding. The foot is the opposite of the hand: the hand goes down, the foot goes up.

How to check yourself: record thirty seconds on your phone and listen a minute later. What sounds rich in real time sounds smeared on the recording, and that gap in time is all you need. The low note is the one that dirties things first, so listen for an old bass sitting underneath a new chord.

And when in doubt — no pedal. A clean passage without it sounds good; a smeared passage with it never sounds good at all.
