Inversions
The same three notes in three arrangements. Exactly the same chord, and a hand that stops leaping across the keyboard.
In the last lesson you played six chords, and you probably noticed a problem: getting from C major to A minor means jumping the entire hand, and getting to F means an even bigger jump. In a real song, at a real tempo, there is no time for jumps like that.
The solution has been around for centuries and it is wonderfully simple. It turns out that the three notes of a chord do not have to sit in the order you learned them in. You can take the bottom one and throw it up to the top, and it is still exactly the same chord. This is called an inversion, and from the moment it clicks your hand will stop sprinting across the instrument.
Take C major in its usual home: C, E, G, from the bottom up.
Now take the low C and move it an octave up, so that it lands above the G. You get E, G, C. This is still C major — precisely the same three notes — but the hand has shifted to the right and the lowest note is now E.
Do it again: take the low E and send that one up too. You get G, C, E. Still C major.
The three cards above are the three arrangements, in order. Look at the names: C is root position, C/E is the first inversion, and C/G is the second. The slash says one thing and one thing only — which note is at the bottom. Everything before the slash is the chord; what comes after it is who is sitting underneath.

And if you do it a fourth time you are back at C, E, G, just an octave higher. A triad has exactly three arrangements, and that is the lot.
Play the three arrangements one after another and listen closely.
They are all C major, and not one of them sounds like the others. Root position sounds settled and solid — like the end of a sentence. The first inversion sounds light, almost floating. The second inversion sounds as though it wants to go somewhere else, which is precisely why players reach for it right before the next chord.
The rule worth taking away from here: the bottom note is what sets the feeling. The ear listens to the bottom first, and everything else piles up on top of it.
Now the practical part, and this is the part that will change how you play.
Play the sequence C, F, G in root position only. Watch what happens: the hand jumps four keys to the right and then five to the left. It is clumsy, it is slow, and it sounds like jumping.
Now play it like this:
Ordinary C. Then F/C — F in second inversion, which is C, F, A. Then G/B — G in first inversion, which is B, D, G.
Look at your hand. It has barely moved. Each finger travels a key or two, and two of the notes even stay exactly where they were from one chord to the next.
This is called voice leading, and it is the difference between playing that sounds like a beginner and playing that sounds like music. Identical chords — only their arrangement changed.
The working rule: when you move from chord to chord, choose the arrangement that asks for the smallest movement. Not because it is prettier in theory, but because a hand that moves less makes fewer mistakes and arrives on time more often.
Until now every chord has been one, three, five. In an inversion that changes, and this is the point where people come unstuck.
The reason is that an inversion is not evenly spaced: it has two notes right next to each other and one note off on its own, so the fingers have to organize themselves differently. Here is the standard right-hand fingering, and it is worth simply adopting it:

In the left hand it mirrors: root position is five, three, one; the first inversion is five, three, one as well; and the second is five, two, one. If that sounds like a lot to remember — it is not, because in practice the hand finds it by itself the moment it tries. Let it try before you read the table again.
The practical rule that replaces the whole table: thumb always on the bottom note, little finger always on the top, and the middle finger settles wherever it is comfortable. In all three arrangements that holds.
This is the most useful exercise in the lesson, and every pianist alive has done it.
Take one chord — say C major — and play it in root position. Then in the first inversion. Then in the second. Then in root position an octave higher. And then climb back down: second, first, root.
The hand climbs and descends the instrument, and while it does it learns three things at once: that the chord is not changing, that the fingers organize themselves differently at each stage, and that all of these positions are available to you at any moment.
Do it with C on the first day, F on the second, G on the third. Three minutes each time. By the end of the week inversions will not be a topic any more — they will simply be places your hand knows.
At this stage people try to calculate, and that is far too slow. Here are two quicker ways.
The eye's way: in a root-position chord the gaps between the fingers are even. In an inversion the spacing breaks — two notes together and one out on its own. Within a week the eye spots it instantly.
The ear's way: play the chord in two arrangements and choose whichever one sounds closer to the chord you played before it. That is almost always the correct one and the comfortable one at the same time.
And most important of all: do not memorize three arrangements for every chord. Learn root position properly, and you will meet the inversions while you are playing — they turn up by themselves as soon as the hand goes looking for the short way round.
Metronome at 60 — four beats a chord, and no more hand movement than you need
An exercise that gets this into the fingers within a few days: play C, F/C, G/B and back to C, four beats each, ten times through. Do not look at your hand. After a few rounds it will find the places on its own, and that is exactly what you are trying to build.
That slash turns up everywhere. On the chord page of a real song you will see C/G, D/F# or Am/C, and now you know exactly what to do with them: the chord is what stands before the slash, and the note after the slash goes to the bottom.
On the guitar it looks nothing like this — there an inversion usually demands a new hand shape, so guitarists routinely skip whatever comes after the slash and play the plain chord.
