Cracking the code
Five shapes you already know, one finger standing in for the nut, and the whole neck stops being uncharted territory.
Know the feeling that somewhere past the fifth fret the map runs out and the guitar turns into uncharted territory? Almost every guitarist goes through it, and the reason is simple: you learned five or six chords down in the open position, and nobody ever explained that they are not six separate objects but five shapes that repeat themselves along the whole neck.
That is what CAGED does. It is not a technique and not an exercise — it is a map. And once you have seen it, you cannot stop seeing it.
CAGED is not a word, it is a spelling list. The five letters are the five open chords, in the order the system lines them up: C, A, G, E and D. That is the whole mnemonic, and it is why the name has outlived every fancier method — the title of the system is also its contents.
Look at them for a moment as shapes rather than as chords. Ignore the names and watch the pattern the fingers make: where the dots sit relative to one another, and which string carries the lowest note.
The claim the system makes is that every major chord in the world, in any position on the neck, is one of those five shapes — simply not in the open position. There is no sixth. It sounds like a wild oversimplification, and it happens to be exactly true.
Here is the idea that opens everything up, and it arrives as a small surprise: the nut — that white strip at the end of the neck — is precisely what your index finger can be.
Look at an open E major. Three fingers press, and three open strings are "pressed" by the nut at fret zero. Now take that identical shape, slide it one fret up, and lay your index finger across all six strings at the first fret in place of the nut.
That is F major. Same shape, same intervals, a different address — and the index finger is doing the job the nut used to do. Push the whole thing up one more fret for F sharp, one more and you have G. All twelve major chords, out of a single shape.
It also explains something that may have been nagging at you: why certain chords "have no open version". They don't, because their shape simply lives somewhere else on the neck.
The barre is where a lot of people stall for months, and usually for one reason: they try to press harder instead of pressing correctly.
And if it still refuses to ring — that is a question of days, not of talent. Every single person who plays has been through it.
That is the A shape, moved. The same principle exactly: the index finger stands in for the nut, and the shape of an open A minor is kept intact above it.
Notice what changed between the two shapes. In the E shape the root — the note that gives the chord its name — sits on the sixth string. In the A shape it sits on the fifth string. That sounds like a technical footnote, and it is in fact the key to the entire system.
Because if you know where the root lives in each shape, and you can read notes on the two thick strings — which is exactly what we trained ourselves to do in the scale lesson — then you can play any major or minor chord without memorizing so much as one table. Find the note, drop the shape onto it.
Now for the part that gives the system its name.
The five shapes are not five islands. They are arranged around the neck in a fixed order, C, A, G, E, D, and then they start over from the beginning. Each shape begins roughly where the previous one ends, and they overlap a little, like links in a chain.
Which means that one and the same chord — G major, say — exists in five different places on the neck, in five different shapes, and every one of them sounds like G major. The difference between them is color: low and heavy down by the nut, bright and clear higher up.
Don't try to memorize all five locations in your first week. Take two. The E shape and the A shape on their own cover most of what you will need in your first year, because both of them lean on roots on the two thick strings.
And one more fact worth carrying, because it saves you half the work: at the twelfth fret everything comes back around. There the strings sound the same notes they do open, one octave higher — exactly the spot marked with a double dot on the neck. So the neck is not twenty-two frets of new material; it is twelve, and then a repeat. Whatever you learned in the lower half holds good, note for note, in the upper half.
The honest answer: you don't wait for it.
There are three ways to play the same chord while the hand is still being built, and all of them are entirely legitimate. No listener anywhere on earth will know:
The barre will arrive. In the meantime, there is no reason whatsoever to stop playing songs.
Three things, and all of them immediate:
Moving a song into another key. If the song sits too high for your voice, move the shapes. Same shape, different fret.
Playing chords with no open version. B flat minor sounds terrifying until you realize it is the A shape at the first fret.
Finding your bearings in a solo. The moment you know which chord shape is sitting under your fingers, you know which notes will sound good over it. That is what turns improvising from guesswork into choice, and it is also why the pentatonic is far easier once you know CAGED.
A barre is built out of short, frequent repetitions, not out of long stubbornness. The muscles between your thumb and your index finger tire within a minute, and from the moment they are tired you are practicing the wrong sound.
Metronome at 60 — place the shape, strum, release, and come back
The exercise: on beat one, place the shape and strum. On beats two and three, let the hand go completely. On beat four, place it again. The release is not a break — it is part of the exercise, because what you are training is the placing, not the holding.

Worth answering honestly, because a wrong expectation is what makes people give up.
The barre itself: between two weeks and two months before it rings cleanly and consistently, at ten minutes a day. You are building a small muscle you have never once used, and there is no way to hurry that — there is only a way to miss it, which is to practice for a solid hour once a week.
The first two shapes: roughly a week before you find them without thinking about it.
Seeing the whole chain: months, and not because it is difficult. You simply have to meet it in a great many songs before it turns into intuition.
And here is the encouraging part: the benefit shows up long before the mastery does. The moment you own the E shape, every song with strange chords in it becomes reachable. That happens in the second week, not in the sixth month.
