Power and distortion
Two notes, two fingers, one shape that slides anywhere on the neck — and the reason ordinary chords turn to mud under distortion.
If you have ever plugged an electric guitar into a distortion pedal, played an open C major and discovered that it came out as noise rather than as a chord, you did nothing wrong. That is exactly what is supposed to happen.
And it is the reason power chords exist.
Distortion does not merely make things louder. It manufactures new notes out of every note fed into it, and when several notes go in at once it manufactures everything thrown off by the collision between them as well.
With two notes it all stays tidy. With three or more the mess begins, and the note most responsible for it is the middle note of the chord — the one that decides whether the chord is major or minor, the "filling" in the sandwich from the chord-building lesson. Its interval against the root is precisely the one that comes back out of the distortion sounding harshest.
Rock's solution was to cut that note out. What is left is the root and the fifth, two notes that blend so well that the ear very nearly hears them as one thick note.
That is a side effect, and it happens to be the most useful property these chords have.
With no middle note, a power chord has no mood. It is not happy and it is not sad. It is simply strong.
Which means you can drop one over almost anything without first working out whether the song is in major or in minor — and it is why entire punk bands are built out of nothing else. It is also why they are written with a "5": G5, A5, E5. Not G major, not G minor. G5.
Look at the card above. Three dots on three neighboring strings — but do not panic, because the heart of the shape is two of them:
The first two are the power chord. The third only thickens it: it adds no new note, just the same root at another height, which makes it entirely optional. Begin with two, and add the little finger when your hand allows it. It appears on the card because that is how most players really do play it.
And the lovely part is that this shape never changes. The same fingers, the same distances, anywhere on the neck. The only thing that changes is the name, and the name is decided by where the index finger is sitting.
Those two use open strings. They sound enormous, and they are also the easiest in the world. Start from them.
A power chord's name is the name of the note under your index finger. Two strings carry almost every one of them:

Two columns, eight rows, and that is everything you need in order to play any rock riff you will ever run into. Look at the last row: at the twelfth fret the whole thing begins over again — the very principle you saw in the CAGED system.

Here is the thing nobody says to beginners, and it is what really separates a clean riff from noise: under distortion, every string you are not playing has to be actively muted.
Played clean, an open string you brushed by accident gives out a small sound that nobody notices. Under distortion it screams at the same volume as the chord itself. A power chord uses two strings, or three — which leaves four strings out in the cold, and every one of them wants to join in.
Both hands share the job:
A simple diagnostic: play the chord, then rake across all six strings at once. Only your own two notes should be heard. If anything else rings, the work in front of you is the muting, not the chord.
And when that muting works you collect a bonus: the right hand already resting there is exactly the position for palm muting, and a power chord plus palm muting is the sound of very nearly every heavy rock song you know.
Now for the part that separates a riff sounding like a record from a riff sounding like an exercise, and most beginners have no idea it even exists.
In heavy rock, power chords are almost always played with downstrokes only. Not down-up as in the strumming lesson — down, and down, and down again, even when it is fast.
The reason is tone. A downstroke strikes the strings at a different angle and with a different force than an upstroke, so the two do not sound identical. A run of down-down-down comes out even and aggressive; down-up comes out rolling and light. Heavy rock wants the first of those.
And the price: it is exhausting. The right hand does twice the work, and after a minute it is burning. That is entirely normal, and it is precisely the thing that builds over time — but only if you practice it slowly.
A rule of thumb that saves injuries: if your shoulder or forearm begins to ache, stop. Fast downstrokes come from a small motion at the wrist, not from the elbow.
The name and the backstory come from rock, but power chords do not belong to rock alone.
On a clean electric they sound open and hollow, which is useful exactly when you want somebody else — a singer, another instrument — to be the one who decides whether this moment is happy or sad.
On an acoustic they work beautifully, and best of all when you are playing alongside somebody: you hold the root and the fifth, they play the full chord, and the result is far thicker than two people playing the same chord.
One more thing: if barre chords are still hard for you — and after the CAGED system they are on their way — a power chord in the same place is a completely legitimate substitute. Two fingers instead of six. Whole songs are played this way.
And after ten minutes of that, do something far more entertaining: pick any three power chords from the table, put them in some order, and loop them. That is a riff. Genuinely. Half the rock you know is exactly this, and the thing that turns it into a song — a form that holds — you have already seen in the blues form.
