Adding Some Spice: Downstrokes and Upstrokes

Your hand is already traveling up and down all the time. The only thing left to decide is when it touches the strings — and that is where groove is born.

What you'll learn

Up to now we have only strummed downward, which is perfectly fine, but it sounds like a parade. In this lesson we add the upstroke, and the moment it arrives everything starts sounding like the radio.

And here is the idea the whole thing is built on, so it is worth reading twice: you are not adding a movement. Your hand is already moving. What you are adding is a decision about when to touch the strings and when to miss them on purpose.

The pendulum that never stops

Forget chords for a moment. Lift your strumming hand and let it travel down-up-down-up, continuously, at a steady speed, like the pendulum of a clock. Do not pause at either end.

That is the whole secret of the right hand, and almost nobody tells you about it: the movement is continuous, the contact with the strings is not. An experienced guitarist playing a complicated pattern is not making more movements than you are. They are simply missing the strings in the places where nothing is supposed to sound, and their hand carries on swinging as if nothing had happened.

Once the pendulum runs by itself, time stops being something you count and becomes something your body holds. It is a direct continuation of your internal clock from the previous lesson: there the pulse was a number you counted out loud, and here it turns into a motion that happens on its own.

The test for whether the pendulum is genuinely running: can you hold a conversation while it goes? If talking makes the movement stumble, your hand is still under conscious control rather than habit. Give it another two days and it will not be.

Eighth notes, and where the “and” falls

So far we have counted four beats to a bar. Now we will cut each beat in half and call the second half “and”:

One and two and three and four and.

That is eight pieces in a bar, and they are called eighth notes. And that division lands on the pendulum perfectly:

The numbers always get a downward movement, and the “and” always gets an upward one. This is not a rule invented to make your life harder — it is simply what happens by itself when the hand keeps moving without stopping.

Two notes on the upstroke, and both of them matter:

The pattern that plays half the radio

Now we will take a few contacts away from the pendulum and end up with a real pattern. We keep the downstroke on “one,” and give up the upstroke of the first “and” along with the downstroke of “three”:

Read that row slowly, and keep this in mind: in the places with a dash the hand carries on moving and simply does not make contact.

This pattern turns up in an absurd number of songs, and there is a musical reason for that which we will get to in the next section. First, let's practice it:

Practice it like this: first the pendulum on its own, no strings, above the guitar, four bars. Then the exact same pendulum, with the hand dropping low enough to make contact, but only in the places marked in the table. And then, only then, add a chord.

Why it sounds good: syncopation

Notice what happened on “three.” We gave up the contact there, but kept the one right after it — the “and” of three. Which means there is a sound between two beats and no sound on the beat.

That is called syncopation, and it is the thing that makes bodies move. Your ear expects an event on the beat, does not get one, and gets it a moment later — and that tiny gap is precisely what feels like groove. Every style that makes people dance, from funk to reggae, is built on that delay.

It is also why the hand has to keep traveling. If it stops when there is no sound, the syncopation reads as a mistake instead of as an intention.

Four patterns, in order of difficulty

The pattern we have learned is not the only one, and the fastest way to sound varied is to keep three or four of them in your hands and choose according to the song. They all use the same pendulum; the only difference is where you make contact.

A tip that changes how a beginner's playing sounds: do not play the same pattern from the first bar of the song to the last. Start in half time on the verse, move to the full pattern on the chorus, then come back. That difference on its own is the difference between an accompaniment and an exercise.

Why it always falls apart on the fifth time

A phenomenon everybody knows and nobody explains: the pattern comes out beautifully four times, and on the fifth the hand seizes up.

It is almost always tension, not a gap in knowledge. When you concentrate, the shoulder climbs, the forearm stiffens, and the pendulum that was free turns into a forced motion the muscle cannot sustain. Four bars is roughly how long a tense arm holds out.

The fix is not to practice harder. It is the opposite:

How to invent a pattern of your own

Now that you understand the mechanism, you do not need anybody to hand you patterns. They get built in three steps:

  1. Start from straight eighths. Down-up on every beat, eight contacts. That is the full grid.
  2. Delete contacts. Always keep the “one” — without it everything loses its anchor — and then take away two or three contacts from anywhere else.
  3. Do not move your hand. The motion stays exactly as it was. Only the contact is canceled.

That is all there is to it. Every pop pattern you have ever heard is that grid with holes in different places, and once you try two or three variations you will discover that your ear already knows which of them sound good.

One tip: patterns with a hole on a beat and a contact immediately afterward will nearly always sound cool, because that is exactly the syncopation we just talked about. Patterns that delete the “and” instead come out squarer and calmer. Both are useful; just know which one you are producing.

A new chord, so there is something to play it on

Two bars of the same chord gets old fast. Here is a third one, and it is easy:

Am

A minor. One finger on the first fret of the second string, and two more on the second fret of the third and fourth strings. Strum from the fifth string down.

If you are arriving from E minor, notice that the fingers already sitting on the second fret barely move at all. Same story as before: a shape that slides, not a new list to memorize.

Now play a bar of A minor and a bar of E minor with the full pattern, for three minutes. That is not an exercise anymore — that is an accompaniment.
