One to Five: How the Hand Sits on the Keys

The numbers every teaching method on the planet uses, and the hand shape that decides whether your playing sounds easy or strained.

Every piano method in the world, in every language, uses the same five numbers. They will turn up above the notes, on chord sheets, and in every lesson from here onward. Learning them takes a minute. Not learning them costs weeks of quiet confusion.

And once the numbers are out of the way we will talk about something that sounds far less important and decides far more: the shape your hand holds while it plays. The very same melody, played with a loose rounded hand or with a stretched flat one, is two different sounds and two entirely different experiences of the instrument.

One to five, in both hands, mirrored

The thumb is one. The index finger is two, the middle finger three, the ring finger four, and the little finger five.

And that holds in both hands. There is no lead hand and no supporting hand, no fretting hand and no strumming hand. Both of them play notes, and in both of them the thumb is number one.

What that means in practice is that the numbers are mirrored. With both hands resting on the instrument, the two thumbs sit in the middle close to each other, and the little fingers are out at the edges. The right hand's third finger travels to the right as the numbers rise; the left hand's third finger travels to the left as the numbers rise. Same number, opposite directions.

If you are arriving here from the guitar, stop for a second. On a guitar the thumb gets no number at all, and the count starts from the index finger. Finger two on a guitar is the middle finger; finger two on a piano is the index. This is the first place everybody who crosses between the two instruments trips up, and it reliably produces a full week of wrong fingerings in people who already know how to play. Two minutes of attention now buys that week back.

A half-minute drill: put both hands flat on a tabletop and say “one” out loud while tapping both thumbs together, “two” with both index fingers, and so on up to five. Do it three times through. That's it — the numbers are yours.

The dome: what the hand should actually look like

Here is the image that works better than any other, and you do not need a second one: imagine you are holding a small orange.

The hand is relaxed, the fingers curve of their own accord, and there is a pocket of air between your palm and the keys. Now put that hand on the keys exactly as it is, without adjusting anything. That is the position.

Four things follow from it, and each one of them is a whole problem of its own when it goes missing:

You touch with the fingertip, not with the flat pad. The finger comes down onto the key almost vertically. A finger lying flat loses control over the volume of the note, and it is also too wide — it will catch its neighbor the moment black keys enter the picture.

The first joint does not collapse inward. Watch the joint nearest the nail while you press. If it buckles inward and goes concave, the finger has lost its structure and the force is escaping sideways. This is the most common fault of all, and it very nearly always disappears the moment you stop pressing too hard.

The wrist is level and flexible. Not drooping below the keys, not hoisted above them. Roughly a straight line running from the elbow out to the knuckles.

The thumb touches the key on its side, not on its tip. It is built differently from every other finger and it is by far the heaviest, so it tends to sound louder than the rest without your ever intending it. Keep half an eye on it.

Where the sound actually comes from

This is the idea that separates a player who sounds tense from one who sounds pleasant, and it is simple enough to say in a line: the sound comes from the weight of the arm, not the strength of the finger.

Try it. Lift your hand about ten centimetres above the keys and let it drop onto a single key without pushing it at all. You heard a full, round note, and your hand is completely relaxed. Now go for a similar volume with the hand resting on the instrument, pushing down with the finger. Notice how much tension that identical result costs you.

The arm is the weight; the finger only aims it at the right key. Everything else, from dynamics all the way up to speed, is built on top of that one understanding.

Which gives you the rule that follows from it: between notes the hand floats, it does not lean. Parking the weight of your arm on the keys while you are not playing is like standing on tiptoe all day long. It is exhausting, and it is exactly what produces wrist pain in beginners.

Five fingers, five keys, no moving

Now let's attach the numbers to the instrument.

Put finger one of your right hand on middle C. Two on the D beside it, three on E, four on F, and five on G. Five fingers on five consecutive white keys, one finger to a key, with no overlapping and no stretching anywhere.

That is the five-finger position, and it is the home the whole of the next lesson works out of. The beauty of it is that the hand does not move at all: every finger is already sitting on its own note, and all that is left to do is drop the right one at the right moment.

Play one, two, three, four, five now, and then back down: five, four, three, two, one. Slowly. Listen for two things and nothing else — that every note actually sounds, and that no other finger flies up into the air while one of them is playing. Fingers taking off is a sign that the hand is working much too hard.

Do the same thing with the left hand, with finger one on middle C and the rest of the fingers running to the left of it — five landing on the F below. The identical numbering, the opposite direction.

How to know the position is right with no teacher in the room

That is the question that nags at everyone learning alone, and the answer is not “by feel” — feel lies to you for the first few weeks, because anything new feels wrong. Here are four objective checks that take half a minute between them.

The coin test. Rest a coin on the back of your hand while you play five notes in a row. If it slides off, the hand is rocking too much — the movement belongs to the fingers, not to the whole hand.

The shadow test. Turn on a light above you and look at the shadow your hand casts. There should be a clear gap between the palm and the keys. No shadow means the hand has gone flat.

The shoulder test. Stop in the middle of playing and deliberately drop your shoulders. If they traveled a long way down, they were up — and that is a sign you are applying force where you should be dropping weight.

The sound test. Play the same note ten times in a row at a steady pace and try to sound it at precisely the same volume every time. This is the hardest of the four by some distance, and it measures exactly what the other three are in service of: control.

And one general rule of thumb: if something hurts, it is not “you haven't got used to it yet”. Pain is information, and at the piano it almost always means there is force somewhere that should be weight.

Three popular tips worth ignoring

A handful of recommendations circulate online that sound serious and do real harm to beginners.

“Lift your fingers high to strengthen them.” No. Lifting high builds tension across the back of the hand and slows you down, and it strengthens precisely nothing. The finger stays close to the key.

“Stretch your hand out so you can reach an octave.” Passive stretching of the fingers is the quickest route to injury there is, and it is very well documented — a famous pianist by the name of Schumann ruined a hand attempting exactly this. Your reach grows on its own with time, or it doesn't, and then you play things a different way.

“Play for an hour straight if you want to progress.” After twenty minutes or so of unbroken playing the quality of the movement drops, and what you are rehearsing from that point onward is bad movement. Three sittings of ten minutes will beat it comfortably.

About the fourth finger, the one everybody complains about

The ring finger is weak and lazy, and it almost never comes down with the force you meant it to. That is true, it happens to everyone, and it is not a problem you need to solve this week.

The cause is not a lack of training but anatomy: the tendons of the fourth finger share a muscle with the third and the fifth, so it is limited before you ever touch a key. Professional pianists live with this their entire careers and simply learn to compensate for it.

What does help: playing slowly enough that the notes come out even. What does not help, and actively causes damage, is stretching exercises that try to “strengthen” the finger by force. Injuries in beginner pianists come almost entirely from that attempt, and never once from playing slowly.
