The major scale and intervals
Two words of vocabulary, one formula seven steps long, and the whole guitar neck stops being random.
Most people assume music theory is a rulebook. It is not. It is a map — an after-the-fact explanation of why the things you already love listening to sound good.
In this lesson we build the first part of that map, and it takes exactly two new words.
On the guitar, the smallest distance between two pitches is one fret. That one is called a half step. Two frets are a whole step.
That is it. Those are the two words. Everything we build from here uses nothing but them.
Now for the detail that almost everybody leaves out, and without which none of this adds up: the notes of Western music are C, D, E, F, G, A and B — and most neighbors sit a whole step apart, but between E and F, and between B and C, there is only a half step. Those are the two exceptions, and there are no others.
That is why, when you walk up one string fret by fret, you are not passing through the notes “in order” — there are pitches in between that have no name of their own, and we mark those with a sharp or a flat. Twelve pitches in total, and then the whole thing starts again an octave higher.
The major scale — the most familiar one, the “happy” one — is a run of seven steps chosen out of those twelve:
Whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half.
Do not memorize it. Play it. Take the fifth string and start at the third fret, which is C:

Play that up and back down twice and you will hear “do re mi” straight away. Nothing happened here except counting frets — and that is precisely the point. A scale is not a list to be learned by heart, it is a pattern of distances.
And here is what makes it useful: start on any other fret, follow that same formula exactly, and you have the same scale in a different key. Start at the fifth fret and you get D major. Same pattern, different place. This is the first time you meet the principle that all of the CAGED system rests on, and it will not be the last.
Fair question, and it has an answer that is not “because that is how it is”.
If we took all twelve pitches at equal distances, no note would feel more important than any other — like a page of text with no punctuation. Choosing seven out of twelve, and deliberately spacing them unevenly, creates different distances between neighbors, and therefore creates places that feel like rest and places that feel like travel.
The two half steps in the formula — between the third degree and the fourth, and between the seventh and the eighth — are the crowded spots, and they do most of the emotional work. The last one especially: the seventh note sits a mere half step below home, so it feels as though it is being pulled there. It even has a name for that: the leading tone.
You will run into this in tabs and wonder whether somebody made a mistake: sometimes it says F sharp and sometimes G flat, and it is the very same fret.
That is not an error, and it is not a whim either — and it also explains why two tabs of one song can look different and sound identical. One rule is at work here: inside any single scale, each letter appears exactly once. If the scale has already used G, the pitch above it is called G sharp and not A flat — otherwise the scale would hold two A's and no G at all, and reading notes would turn into a nightmare.
So the name is settled by context, not by the sound. Same fret, two names, and each is correct in its own place.
Now the step that turns all this from a curiosity into a working tool: we number the notes of the scale from one to seven.
Why does that matter? Because the number stays true in every key. The fifth degree in C major is G; in D major it is A; and in both of them it behaves in exactly the same way. Musicians talk in numbers for that reason and no other: when somebody says “this one goes to the five”, everybody knows what is meant without asking which key we are in.
It is also why a capo confuses nobody, and why you can drop a song into your own vocal range without learning it again from scratch. The numbers never moved.
In the lesson on families of chords we will build a full chord on each of the seven degrees, and that is the moment all of this starts to pay you back.
The natural minor scale is a different run of those same steps:
Whole, half, whole, whole, half, whole, whole.
But here is the surprising fact: A minor holds exactly the same notes as C major. The same seven pitches, without a single exception. All that changed is where you begin counting — which is to say, which pitch feels like home.
Play those two chords one after the other. They share notes, they come out of precisely the same family, and they sound nothing alike. The difference is not in the material — it is in the center of gravity.
That is also the answer to “why is minor sad”. It is not really sad; the distance from the first degree to the third is simply a half step smaller, and the Western ear has been taught to read that as sadness. Halfway through the next lesson we will see exactly where that half step sits.
Plenty of people stall right here, because it looks as though you have to remember a hundred and twenty-two little squares. You do not. You need two anchors and one pattern.
The anchors: the sixth string and the fifth string. Learn the note names on those two only, and only at the dotted frets — three, five, seven, nine and twelve. That is ten notes in total, and it is enough to locate everything else.
The pattern: two strings up and two frets along gives you the same note, one octave higher. If you have found G on the sixth string at the third fret, there is another G waiting on the fourth string at the fifth fret. It holds everywhere on the neck, with one exception worth knowing about: crossing onto the second string costs you one extra fret, because that string is tuned differently from the rest of its neighbors.
With those two anchors and that one pattern, finding a note stops being memory and becomes a two-second calculation. After a few weeks the calculation disappears as well.
A scale played without a pulse is a list of notes. A scale played in time is music — and it goes into your fingers several times faster.
Metronome at 60 — one note per click, up and back down
Begin with one note per click. When that is clean, try two notes per click. Do not raise the tempo before the climb and the descent come out without hesitation — most people can get up the scale and then stumble on the way back, because they memorized a sequence instead of learning a pattern.

Before we even get there, it is worth knowing what it is: the pentatonic scale is this scale minus two notes. You take out the degrees that create the most friction, and what remains is five pitches that can barely sound wrong over the chords of the key.
That, and not any comfort under the fingers, is why it is the first scale every improviser learns. It is forgiving. We will build your first solo on it in the lesson on the pentatonic scale.
